An Integrated Approach to Business Excellence

A closer look at the integrated processes for prime, principle, core concepts and business excellence

Integrated Process (THREE)

In an organisation striving for excellence, leadership places a high priority on human resource development with quality orientation.

PEOPLE BASED MANAGEMENT means:

"Giving people the knowledge, skills and encouragement to take responsibility for the quality of their own work"

What am I supposed to do?

Help employees to reach their full potential

break down barriers between departments, allowing people to work together in teams

institute programs of ongoing training and education

make employees feel they contribute to the organisation achievements and that their contribution is highly valued

What does "People Based Management" show?

It shows the extent to which:

human resource management support Quality, by proving people with the knowledge and skills they need to do a good job

feedback is provided to employees on their performance

means are available for all employees to contribute effectively to meeting the organisation's quality objectives

People Based Management is translated into practice by TWO CORE CONCEPTS: Teamwork and People Make Quality.

TEAMWORK

Providing people with an opportunity to work together in the pursuit of total quality helps to remove internal barriers, makes people aware of their interdependent tasks and improves communication. Through the use of teams people clearly understand the consequences of poor quality

What does "Teamwork" show?

It shows the extent to which the organisation:

uses teams to solve cross-functional problems

explores teams as platforms for change

brings people together to improve communication

develops teams for every ones participation

PEOPLE MAKE QUALITY

Systems, standards and technology themselves will not mean quality. People need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills for the job, and be informed about how well they are doing so that they become encouraged and responsible for their jobs. Involvement and commitment to customer satisfaction are key factors.

What does "People Make Quality" show?

It shows the extent to which:

quality related training is given both to managers and employees

managers remove the barriers that prevent people from improving quality (i.e. lack of training, poorly defined jobs, etc)

the organisation empowers individuals by creating quality culture and a collaborative and environment.

WHY FOLLOW THIS PROCESS?

Most organisational problems demand an interdepartmental cooperation that can be more effectively achieved through the use of teams

Training and education make people embrace a continuous process of learning that is essential to business excellence.

Motivated and knowledgeable employees will effectively solve problems when they occur, making the organisation save considerable amounts of money with recurrent failures.
