An Integrated Approach to Business Excellence

A closer look at the integrated processes for prime, principle, core concepts and business excellence

Integrated Process (TWO)

To achieve business excellence, leadership decisions must be based on facts. Knowing the current performance levels is essential to measuring the organisation improvement.

MANAGEMENT BY FACT (MBF) means:

"Having the facts (objective data and necessary tools) to manage the business at all levels"

What am I supposed to do?

collect and analyse information about customer needs, operational problems and the success of improvement efforts

look at the organisation as a set of interrelated processes

identify critical areas/variables and control points where measurement should take place

What does "Management by Fact" show?

It shows the extent to which the organisation:

has a performance measurement system that evaluates its quality improvement processes

disseminates performance measurements throughout the organisation

uses the performance measurements to improve its products and processes

Management by Fact is translated into practice by TWO CORE CONCEPTS: All Work is Process and Measurement.

ALL WORK IS PROCESS (AWP)

Every organisation is a complex network of processes. A process is a combination of inputs and steps to follow to produce outputs. All processes contain inherent variability. One of the main ideas of Quality Management is to progressively reduce variation.

What does the "All Work is Process" show?

It shows the extent to which the organisation:

has processes that are designed to meet the quality requirements

assesses the quality of its processes

determine which are the critical processes and selects adequate control points

applies appropriate statistical methods to control its processes

uses assessment results and benchmarking to enhance knowledge about processes

MEASUREMENT (M)

Having a measure of how well the organisation is doing is essential to choose among different improvement initiatives and assess the effectiveness of quality efforts.

What does "Measurement" show?

The extent to which the organisation:

collects a wide range of complete and accurate performance indicators

develops an appropriate methodology for assessing quality

compares current performance with past performance and with that of competitors and best in practice organisations

WHY FOLLOW THIS PROCESS?

Only by collecting relevant data and establishing the facts, you can make reasonable decisions based on facts. Knowing what went wrong and what was effective will make you better use your resources, hence contributing to business excellence. Understanding interdependencies will enhance cooperation. Looking at your organisation as a network.
